Saturday, March 22nd
Since my parents and I had lunch reservations for noon, we made sure to start our day early enough (not difficult for us, since we are "early birds" - even when on vacation! haha), so that we would have time to walk around and such, before having to head over to the restaurant. But before we knew it, it was time to make our way towards our lunch spot - as that old saying goes, time flies when you are having fun! :0)
Located amongst an array of specialty shops and food-markets was Candle 79, a rather well-known vegan restaurant in NYC (and known as the "sister restaurant" of the equally-popular, Candle Café). The décor inside was rather eclectic and posh, but still inviting; and it definitely had "curb appeal," outside! My parents and I were at Candle 79 for three main reasons: one, to experience the cuisine (would it be as delicious as many people have reported it to be?); two, to celebrate a special "event" (which I will reveal shortly); and three (and most importantly!), to meet our "guest of honor" for lunch:
So who exactly was our "guest of honor," you ask? Why, it was none other than "Vko" (her alias) from the "Lifestyles of the Chic & Vegan" blog! Vko's blog was one of the very first blogs that I ever visited - I have been reading her blog since before I even started my own blog, and have enjoyed reading about Vko's incredibly exciting, fast-paced schedule and life. It was truly an honor getting to meet such a lovely, inspiring individual (whom I have "known" for quite some time now), in person.
Our lunch at Candle 79 was bound to be an adventure, since none of us had ever dined there (Vko said that she had dined at Candle Café before, but had heard that Candle 79 was more "upscale" and had a different selection of dishes on the menu). Another reason why this lunch would be an adventure, and something to celebrate? Well, March 22nd marked my one-year vegan anniversary - that's right! I have officially been a vegan for one full year now! Vko's two-year vegan anniversary is on April 12th (which obviously has not occurred yet), so we prematurely celebrated that event as well. So we all knew that we wanted to enjoy a lavish meal, for the celebration/new restaurant experience :0)
The menu was very overwhelming, with so many enticing-sounding choices; but we eventually decided on what to order:
While my mom, Vko, and I just sipped hot tea and water during lunch, my dad enjoyed something a little more "exotic": He ordered the Limonade, which was a refreshing concoction of lemon, lime, agave nectar, and some ice. The fact that this drink caused my dad to slurp the remaining contents through his straw, without leaving any liquid behind, proves that he was definitely pleased with his beverage selection ;0)
While we waited for our meals, the waitress served us a complementary plate of Fresh-Baked Strawberry Mini Muffins, as an "amuse bouche." My dad said that he could have eaten just a plate of those muffins for lunch, he enjoyed his two-bite treat so much, haha.
As an appetizer for the entire table, Vko ordered the Grilled Seitan Chimichurri, which was a plate of citrus-herb marinated seitan skewers. Since they serve that same dish at Candle Café, Vko has eaten it before, and expected it to be just as good (if not better) - unfortunately, the seitan was not very tender, and a bit disappointing in that regard; but we all still had high hopes for our main courses!
It was fortunate that we went to Candle 79 on the weekend, since that is when they serve their brunch specialties. Pictured above is my dad's lunch, which was ordered from the brunch menu: he ordered the Home-Style Pancakes, topped with fresh banana slices and strawberries, and served with raspberry "butter" and gingered-maple syrup. My dad enjoyed the pancakes (who wouldn't enjoy a fluffy stack of pancakes?) and all of the meal components, but said that the maple syrup did not have a ginger flavor at all - false advertising, I guess? Haha ;0)
Whereas my dad ordered a sweet dish for lunch, my mom went with a savory entrée: she ordered the Seitan Piccata, which featured a seitan cutlet topped with a lemon-caper sauce, as well as some "creamed" spinach, a grilled potato cake," and oyster mushrooms, as the accompaniments. Although it certainly is not the most photogenic dish out there, it was definitely satisfying to my mom's palate.
Although the decision was not easy, I chose the Black Bean Pumpkin Seed Burger for lunch. This hearty "burger" patty was served on a caramelized-onion-potato bun, with a side of mixed greens, avocado slices, polenta fries, and some chipotle-ketchup. While this dish was certainly satiating and delicious, it was very difficult to eat - I ended up having to eat it with a knife and fork, because the "burger" patty was practically disintegrating! Although it was not firm enough to hold its shape, it was still packed with great flavor. Oh and the chipotle ketchup? It tasted just like regular ketchup (just like how my dad's ginger-maple syrup tasted just like regular maple syrup, haha).
Going for another one of the brunch specialties, Vko ordered the Wild Mushroom & Spring Vegetable Crepe, served with a tarragon aioli, artichoke salad, and mesclun greens. The aioli was a bit on the tangy side, but still complemented the crepe-fillings quite well.
Despite our large, main meals, we still had room for dessert (of course - and we remembered to take photographs of the desserts this time! Haha) - the desserts took a while to arrive at the table (the service was a bit slow throughout the entire meal), but the wait was well worth it, once we saw (and tasted) these delicacies:
Vko ordered the impeccably-presented Mango Napoleon, which was composed of layers of almond-shortbread cookies, a vanilla-almond "cream"-filling, mango compote, and topped with a scoop of green tea ice "cream." The shortbread cookies were so "buttery" and flaky, that each piece practically melted in your mouth; and the vanilla-almond "cream" was very reminiscent of peanut butter! All and all, a very unique, flavorful dessert.
My dad opted for a refreshing scoop of Orange Sorbet, which was good but "not the best sorbet that I have had," according to my dad.
My mom and I both ordered what everyone at the table agreed, was the best dessert of all: the Live Pineapple-Cherry Parfait ("Live" is the same thing as "Raw" - hooray for more raw vegan desserts!). This luscious sweet-treat featured layers of nut granola, a pineapple-cashew "cream," cherries, and a scoop of raw coconut ice "cream." Not only was this dessert absolutely heavenly-tasting, but it was quite gorgeous as well - I heard people sitting at nearby tables (which was not difficult to do, since all of the tables were extremely close together, haha) whispering about its beauty - no joke!
All four of us agreed that while we did enjoy our first experience at Candle 79, we would rather dine there for just the desserts (which were, hands down, the highlight of the meal); and my dad would not mind having some more of those mini muffins that were served at the beginning of lunch, haha ;0)
After a long, leisurely lunch with great company, it was time to go our separate ways for the day; but this was definitely not the last time that Vko and I would meet, in NYC! :0) My parents and I continued on our "walking trail," towards a specific destination that we had been anticipating on visiting for quite some time now:

In the photograph above, I am standing in front of a piece of "sentimental nostalgia" - the townhouse of my great-uncle (who passed away just one year ago). I was extremely close with my great-uncle (who was my grandfather's older brother), and miss him dearly; but it was lovely to get to visit his stunning NYC townhouse, which he lived in from 1980 until late 2006 (although he first moved to NYC in the 1950s). It was definitely my great-uncle who ignited my love for the city, and I will cherish my memories of him forever.
After spending another long (but fun-filled) day around town, my parents and I returned to our hotel to get ready for our dinner reservations. As you can see, we had a "costume change" for the occasion:
Black and white attire, as always :0)
My adorable parents, haha :0D
We did not have to travel far for dinner that evening, since the restaurant was conveniently located right inside of our hotel: we dined at the Jean-Georges restaurant, which bears the name of its award-winning chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten (who is one of only three Michelin-starred chefs in NYC).
Since this restaurant was far from being vegan (or even remotely vegetarian), my dad called the staff ahead of time, to see if they could prepare something vegan-friendly that evening. Luckily, I did not have any trouble ordering a decent meal - so far so good! But that is where my "luck" ended:
Now, the dish pictured above certainly looked like what I ordered (which was a simple mixture of steamed and sautéed vegetables); but it did not taste like what I had ordered. After taking just one bite, I seriously felt as if I had just chugged an entire salt-shaker - ick!! Even my mom, who loves a lot of seasonings and spices added to her dishes, thought that my dinner was sickeningly salty!
I seriously think that someone in the kitchen was appalled by how simple my order was (since the chef is used to creating complex, bizarre "delicacies"), and insisted on adding some salt for "flavor"; and then apparently five or so more chefs/kitchen staff members had the same idea, so they decided to add some "flavor" as well! Yuck. Even though I did get the dish re-made (sans salt, which is how I ordered it in the first place), and it tasted okay, I still had a salty aftertaste in my mouth. After dinner, I ran over to Whole Foods (literally, since it was located right across from our hotel, haha) for a sweet-treat :0) Sorry Jean-George, but I do not think that I will be dining in your restaurant again, anytime soon - but hey, I give you credit for creating such a gorgeous atmosphere!
After yet another full day, moving non-stop, my parents and I were grateful that we were already in the hotel, after dinner - time to go to bed, for sure!
Just one more day in NYC - stay tuned for the fourth and final installment of VeggieGirl & the City!

Ahh look at all that food!! You made great choices. =) And congrats on your vegan anniversary on the 22nd!!
those desserts look amazing!
sorry about yr Black Bean Pumpkin Seed Burger falling apart. it sounds like a good plate of food.
I am soooo jealous you got to visit ALL of the vegan restaurants on my list of places to go in NYC! After seeing all your fabulous meals, I now know I have to go to all of them, and actually have a whole trip planned out for this spring/my birthday this summer (when I get back from Italy!), revolved around visting them all!
Looks like you had a great time, I always love your colorful posts and great descriptions!
So glad you got to experience candle 79... I've heard soooo many great things about it. The seitan picatta that your mom ordered if often quoted as one of their famed dishes. Those desserts look tasty as well.
How fun that you got to meet up with vko! And for your one year veganiversary no less! That's awesome. Time really goes fast when you're eating well!
Happy One Year of Eating Vegan.
Sorry about the miss you had with your salty veggies.
Oh my goodness! That black bean burger with polenta fries made my mouth water. Oh, and I love your white coat--so cute!
All the photos are wonderful - I feel like I was there. The townhouse of your great-uncle looks like a knockout beautiful place.
oh. man. I want it ALL. I don't even know which I'd pick if I have to pick one... I'm drooling ALL over my computer...
I love that city and vegan food.
and the answer is ABSOLUTELY "HELL YES!"
Even when I go home on vacation, I try to hit up museums and eats that I've never been to & after 26 years of living and visiting NYC, I still have a long list of "must do's."
I wish your experience at Candle 79 had been better. It's one of my favorite restaurants in the city, but I've only ever been for dinner. I've had the Seitan Piccata and I think it's wonderful. You're right, though, the desserts there are divine. I'm holding my breath for the next installment, hoping that you made it to Teany, which I really love, too!
Forgot to mention that I've tagged you for a meme. I hope you can participate, but no pressure. ;)
It's funny that you preferred the desserts at 79, I actually sent mine back when I went! I think they need a pastry chef. I've never had lunch there, only the amazing dinner. None of the dish pictured are similar to the dinner menu, so we have had very different experiences there! Very funny!
p.s. I love Valerie! She's the best.
apart from the meal mishap, it sounds like you still had a blast!
The vegetables look gorgeous- pity about the salt >.<
Your entire trip looks like it was so much fun! It looks like you had amazing desserts, I recognize many of the savoury dishes from the Candle Cafe Cookbook, I wonder how they compare.
Happy Veganniversary! (I wish I knew the date for mine!)
PS-LOVE the coat!
you really had an awesome trip and fantastic food (except for the salty veggies... tsk at the chefs)!
If I'm very lucky I might get to visit NY this fall so your reviews will come in handy =)
Looks like a great family trip! Your black bean pumpkin burger looked so yummy ;) Sorry to hear about the salty veggie disaster, but happy anniversary!
Ugh..sorry about the meal disaster! That happened to my dad with his linguine dish not too long ago as well. Why people find the need to add *so* much salt, I'll never know. Veggies stand out by themselves with just a few herbs and being cooked just right...
Looks like a fun time though!! It's great that you're getting the chance to meet fellow bloggers! :)
happy veggieversary Liz! that parfait *does* look beautiful! And I love your coat. :)
All things considered, I'd say that one bad meal out of a weekend away from home is pretty damn good!
I love candle cafe, but never been to Candle 79. Maybe I'll stick with the cheaper version :)
Looks like you are having a great time in NYC, and those pictures are amazing!
I love NYC, and although I'm not a vegetarian or vegan, I've been to an incredible restaurant that offers both. Josie's East in NYC is one of my favorite restaurants. They have meat dishes, but they also offer vegetarian and vegan dishes and also have sushi. The vegetarian sushi roll there (with brown rice) as well as regular fish rolls with fruit are some of the best sushi rolls I've ever had.
They offer a great butternut squash soup and many meatless options you would love! There is a Josie's East & West, Josephina's and Citrus. Josie's East is the best by far, West didn't look as good. I haven't been to Josephina yet but Citrus was also very good (but a bit more expensive). Oh also, the portabello mushroom fajitas are to die for. You must go!

Happy one-year vegan anniversary! The food at Candle 79 looks great- too bad some of it didn't taste as amazing as it looks. Oh well, desserts are always the highlight of the meal as far as I am concerned :)
Still one more day to see?! Wow- I cannot wait!
Josie's East is amazing!!! that and Zen Palate are my two favorite vegetarian restaurants. During college I used to go to Zen Palate every week for dinner. I also love how there are sooo many vegetarian/vegan restaurants in Manhattan and throughout NY. Hope the rest of your stay in NY is amazingly delicious :)...I love living in NY esp. for the food lol
Hello my dear Veggie Girl!
Ah- what a super super fun post of course! I had such a great time with you & your parents- can't wait till you visit again. (I think you didn't realize that you "outed" me with my name there- but no big deal because it was a great post!)
I love that shot of you in front of the your great-uncle's townhouse. Come back soon to NYC!!
Lots of love-
vko
Your trip sounds perfect. Getting to meet fellow bloggers is so much fun. Bummer that Candle 79 meals were not up to par, but we can always be thankful for dessert! Happy veganiversary. So cool. Boy how the time flies. I just hit my 18 month mark and can't believe it. I am glad I found your blog. It is so much fun to be blog buddies. :o)
Wow, all that food is amazingly drool-worthy. You know,...except the salt-bomb at the end. haha.
Sounds like quite a great trip. :)
What a great way to celebrate your vegan anniversary. I'm looking forward to the final installment!
I am definitely bias, but the cooked vegan food doesn't look nearly as lovely as the raw vegan food--especially the food from Pure!
I am appalled, shocked and saddened that Jean-Georges' vegan options was so pathetic. Next time you come to the city,( to visit me :))you'll have to try the 9-course vegetable tasting at Per Se!
I'm so glad you are having fun in the city. I can't wait to hear what you get up to on your last installment.
Sheltie Girl @ Gluten A Go Go
The food all looks so mouth watering. What a fun trip!
And how cool to get to meet some of your blogger buds in person!
It's awesome that you got to meet up with some cool food bloggers! I'm so glad you had a nice time there, the trip looks like so much fun. The live dessert you have IS gorgeous! Mmm, wish I could try that...
Oh, and also: I love your outfits! That white coat is so pretty.
Sounds like a great trip! NYC is a fun, fun place. I did go to the Candle Cafe and enjoyed my meal there, though even the price there was a little high. Their coconut carrot cake was to die for....I have heard other bloggers bemoan the fact that Candle 79 isn't always that great. I did end up buying the Candle Cafe cookbook, and have had about 50% good experiences with it. The seitan skewers that you blogged about here were pretty easy to make and very, very tender and good! Have you made seitan before?
Wow everything looks so scrumptious! I'm continually amazed at how gourmet vegan food can be! Of course there's nothing like that where I live- barbeque basically dominates the South. Congratulations on your "veganversary!" :)
I love reading about your adventures in nyc! The last couple times I was in the city I didn't really try any of the yummy food there (does pizza delivery count?) but now I'm totally regretting all the food I missed. I'm glad you had such a nice time, & ate so much good food!
i'm so jealous of your nyc eating adventures!!!
Wow! Congrats on the one year anniversary! :D
And I'm in awe of all the excellent food you managed to order in the restaurants you and your parents went to! The pancakes look so good x__X I haven't had pancakes in so long...
And ick~I hate it when people get too excited when adding condiments and end up taking the whole flavor of the food away D: That's one reason I kinda can't wait til summer so I can get away from the caferia's over-spiced foods...
You need to pack me inside your suitcase for your next vacation. It seems like you've been having an amazing time!
Ugh, I so feel you on that Jean-George vegetable disaster. (See my newest Disney post for details... I love that we're both posting about our trips at the same time, too.) And I'm curious about your black-and-white ensemble "rule." Any particular reason for that, or is it just that you look most dashing in black & white? Haha.
OMG, that parfait.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LIZ!
Today's your birthday? I did not know.
Happy birthday!! I hope you have a good one.
Wow Veggie Girl--looks liek you had a magnificent time in the Big Apple.
Isn't VKO wonderful? She is a bright light, as are you ;)
Omniman and I had dinner at Candle 79 but we were disappointed. The only great thing we ordered were the chimichurris (Sorry yours weren't up to par). ALthough you weren't toally wowed, it stillooks liek their brunch is better than their dinner.
Welcome back.
XO
WElcome back. Vegan airline food is the pits--I usually go for ASian vegetarian b/c it is usually the safest. When traveling on Air India, I ordered a vegan meal and bit into what I assumed was tofu. It was paneer. Live and become more suspicious.
Can't wait to hear more about your journey.
I'm not vegan but the pictures of the food at Candle 79 could be enough to change my mind! Wow, the seitan looks delish.
We have a lovely vegetarian restaurant in Waterloo, ON called Zen Gardens. My beau and I are meat eaters (slowly cutting back) but find it such a treat to eat there.
I love NYC and will definitely visit one of these restaurants on my next visit (maybe this summer!)
Wow! Way to make me hungry! I can imagine it was difficult to pick something to eat with al those options.
